[to Scott] Did you enjoy the years that I was with the Police, or do you like me better solo? BORDEN: My original character when I first started was 'Flash Borden.' ROSS: Flash Borden? (laughs) ROSS (reporting): Steve also married his longtime girlfriend, Sue, at the start of his career.It was tough for the young couple, but despite years of travel and measly paychecks with no big breaks, Sue believed it was just a matter of time before her husband hit it big. ROSS (reporting): Then in 1988, Sue’s faith in Steve paid off. In his first big match, Sting wrestled Rick Flair live on television.
STEVE BORDEN (professional wrestler "Sting"): First of all, I want to get this out of the way – I love your [the rock star Sting] music. ' ROSS (reporting): Steve said yes, and after ten punishing weeks at training camp, he hit the wrestling circuit.
Borden changed his name initially from Flash to Sting, while Hellwig became Rock.
The Blade Runners, under the management of Eddie Gilbert, wrestled in the Universal Wrestling Federation based in Shreveport, Louisiana until Rock left the promotion in mid-1986.
Borden trained under Red Bastien and Rick Bassman for ten weeks and debuted in November 1985 in the Continental Wrestling Association in Memphis as Flash Borden.
Power Team USA disbanded in 1986, and two of the members, Borden and Jim "Justice" Hellwig (later becoming The Ultimate Warrior), formed a tag team known as the Blade Runners.
